In Renaissance England, wedding feasts could last up to a week, with at least 12 courses, including meat, pottage, and substantial side dishes like beef, pork, fish, pastries, and roasted vegetables. The wedding meal often followed a staged dramatic performance, which marked the climax of the wedding festivities. At the end of the feast the couple typically dipped a hank of cloth in spices to exchange with each other, a ritual signifying their status as life-long partners. To end the event, lavish gifts were often presented.
